Best web-data tools for RAG and LLM ingestion
Feeding a retrieval-augmented app means turning many URLs into clean text, and often searching the live web at query time. The cost drivers are page volume, whether pages need JavaScript rendering, and whether extraction is priced per page, per token or per credit.
Prices checked . Prices only: we have not benchmarked success rate, speed or output quality, so treat this as a cost shortlist, not a verdict.
What this workload needs
- Clean markdown or text rather than raw HTML, ideally with link and metadata preserved.
- A way to crawl a whole docs site (map the URLs, then fetch each) as well as single pages.
- Fresh answers at query time: a search API that returns page content or snippets suited to an LLM.
- A predictable bill: per page (Firecrawl, Tavily extract credits), per output token (Jina Reader) or self-hosted (Crawl4AI, where you pay your own infrastructure).
Cost shortlist
- Firecrawl: about $83.00/month at 100,000 requests (Standard, annual billing). Tends to fit: RAG ingestion of whole sites. Watch-out: Credits are shared across endpoints, so JSON-format extraction (+4 credits) can quintuple the per-page cost. MCP: Yes.
- Exa: about $100/month at 100,000 requests (Contents (per content type)). Tends to fit: Semantic/neural search for agents and coding assistants. Watch-out: Contents and summaries bill separately from search. MCP: Yes.
- Tavily: about $160/month at 100,000 requests (Pay as you go). Tends to fit: RAG and agent web search with citations/answers. Watch-out: Advanced search is 2 credits, so effective price doubles. MCP: Yes.
The shortlist is the four lowest published-price estimates at 100,000 requests a month for url to llm-ready content. It is rule-based (cheapest first) and not influenced by affiliate status.

How to choose
- If you ingest a fixed corpus once, compare the one-off page count, not the monthly rate: pay-as-you-go or a single month of a plan may be cheapest.
- If you re-crawl on a schedule, multiply pages by crawl frequency. 5,000 pages re-crawled weekly is about 21,500 requests a month.
- Measure tokens per page before trusting any per-token estimate: Jina Reader's figure here assumes 2,000 tokens per page.
- For query-time retrieval, use a search API (Tavily, Exa, Brave) rather than a scraper; they are priced per search, not per page.
